Melvin Potter Obituary

Melvin A. Potter, known affectionately as "Mel" to his friends and family, passed away on January 11, 2026, at the age of 85 in Port St. Lucie, Fla, following a stroke. Born on July 15, 1940, in Somerville, NJ, Mel's early years were marked by a spirited enthusiasm for life that would become his hallmark.

Mel proudly served his country as an Army veteran, a period of his life that instilled in him a sense of discipline and dedication. He carried these virtues into his civilian life, where he became a beloved figure at the New York Mets Spring Training games, serving as an usher for the past 23 years. His warm smile and friendly banter were as much a part of the game day experience as the crack of the bat and the roar of the crowd.

Mel's Jewish heritage was an important part of his identity, shaping his values and traditions throughout his life.

Mel's love for his family was the cornerstone of his life. Predeceased by his parents Myron and Sophie, his brothers Joel and Terry, and son Jeffrey; Mel is survived by Dianne, his devoted wife of 56 years, who stood by his side through every chapter of their life together. His son, David Potter, and daughter-in-law, Christine, were a constant source of pride and joy, as were his grandson, Logan, and granddaughter, Courtney Disney, along with her husband, Caleb. The arrival of his great-grandson, Oliver, brought a new sparkle to Mel's eye and added a new title to his name, "Poppi".

Despite his busy schedule, Mel never missed an opportunity to engage with his passions. He was an avid golfer, relishing the chance to be out on the green under the Florida sun. His love of sports extended far beyond the golf course, as he was a dedicated fan of the New York Giants, Yankees, Rangers, and Knicks. His enthusiasm for sports was infectious, and he was always ready to share a stat, a story, or a word of encouragement for his teams.

Mel's roots in Milltown, NJ, remained important to him throughout his life. He cherished the annual tradition of participating in the Milltown 4th of July Parade, a testament to his enduring community spirit and patriotic pride. He was a man who embraced tradition and the joy of celebration, qualities that endeared him to all who knew him.

In his educational journey, Mel graduated from Somerville High School in NJ, where he formed lifelong friendships and established the solid foundation that would support his future endeavors.

Mel's life was a tapestry of service, family, faith, and fun. He lived with an open heart, a ready smile, and a generous spirit. His memory will be cherished and kept alive in the stories told, the laughter shared, and the lives he touched. Melvin A. Potter's legacy is one of love, friendship, and an unwavering zest for life that will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know him.
